Self-regulation - The foreign exchange market used to be viewed as an unregulated market. When trading volumes soared in the 1970’s, ACI members felt the need for professional internal rules and started drafting them. This led to the first self-regulatory Code of Conduct proposed by professionals. It was well received and appreciated by banks’ management, central banks, and regulators all over the world. It set a global framework much needed in a free market operating 24 hours a day, almost 7 days a week. As of today, it is still an exception in the financial world.

Over the last 40 years, the Model Code underwent a series of changes to reflect new technology, new professions, new populations and new ethical frameworks. ACI is in contact with a large number of central banks, financial authorities, and regulators, many of which require the Model Code for their local market participants.

Education services and Certification

ACI provides many leadership opportunities – e.g. young VP who is ready for something more… but where there is no opening readily available internally. Gain management experience on local ACI committee, and provide guidance for the market:

Portable Education Certification

Market evolution also induced developing training and education certification. Although ACI is not a global campus as such, it boasts an extensive network of trainers, mostly former professional traders. The Association has built over the years a strong reputation for its certification programmes. A growing number of candidates sit its Dealing Certificate, Operation Certificate, Model Code Certificate or ACI Diploma every year. Questions on the Model Code are part of all three exams syllabus, while a new specific Model Code Certificate was recently launched. The global recognition of ACI certification, from London, Singapore, Cape Town to Moscow is a major appeal. Like an international driving licence, ACI certificates are recognised by the vast majority of local financial authorities and bank management. In an increasing number of countries, operators cannot trade without ACI certification.

 

Membership services to individual members

ACI is the only financial association based on individual membership. Members, professionally recognized for their expertise, are regularly consulted by central bank, financial authorities and regulatory bodies or asked to join working groups. Freedom to speak outside of an employee umbrella, and independence, also feature high on ACI ethos. As lobbyists, our members don’t push for private interests, but represent the global market servicing the global economy.

The Financial Markets Association is assisting the entire wholesale financial services to improve its behaviour and embed the cultural norms that you expect of your staff. However, the Statutes of the ACI are clear on the benefits of individual membership: While large organisations can do their utmost to set the “Tone From The Top” and participate with the best of intentions, it is up to individual staff members and their supervisors to hold themselves to the standard, and to be accountable accordingly. ACI membership is therefore at individual level.
